Bacteriostatic water and sterile water are not the same thing
The difference is one ingredient, and it decides whether a vial survives being opened twice.
Carries 0.9% benzyl alcohol. The preservative suppresses bacterial growth in the remaining volume, so a sealed vial can be drawn from more than once across its stated shelf life. This is what “multi-dose” on the label refers to.
No preservative at all. Sterile at the moment the seal is broken and undefended after it, so the remainder of the vial is discarded rather than kept. Single-use by construction, not by convention.

Common questions
- What is bacteriostatic water?
- Sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative. The benzyl alcohol is what makes the vial bacteriostatic: it suppresses the growth of bacteria that would otherwise colonise the water once the seal has been broken, which is why the vial is described as multi-dose rather than single-use.
- How is it different from sterile water?
- Plain sterile water carries no preservative. Once its seal is broken it has no defence against contamination and the remainder is discarded. Bacteriostatic water carries 0.9% benzyl alcohol, so the sealed vial can be drawn from more than once across its stated shelf life.
- What sizes do you stock?
- 10 mL and 30 mL sealed vials. Both are held in stock in Florida and ship from there. Bulk pricing steps down at 25 units and again at 100.
- Is a certificate of analysis included?
- Yes. Every lot we release is published in a public library before you buy, and the QR code on the label resolves to the certificate for the exact lot in your hand.
- How long does shipping take?
- Orders whose payment clears before 2 PM Eastern are dispatched the same business day; later orders go the next business day. Standard shipping is free on every order, with no minimum, and typically takes 3–5 business days within the United States.
- What is it for?
- Laboratory research use only. It is supplied as a reagent-grade diluent for bench work and is not for human or veterinary use, and has not been evaluated by the FDA.
