Epitalon vs DSIP — both associated with sleep research, for different reasons

5 min readUpdated 2026-10-07

Epitalon is a four-amino-acid peptide from the Russian peptide-bioregulator programme, associated with pineal and ageing research. DSIP — delta sleep-inducing peptide — is a nonapeptide named for the electrophysiological activity it was isolated in connection with. Both appear in sleep-adjacent literature, but they arrive there from unrelated research traditions and neither has a well-replicated mechanism.

These two get paired because searches about sleep research surface both. The pairing is topical, and the compounds have no shared origin.

A name is not a mechanism

"Delta sleep-inducing peptide" is the most consequential naming decision in this comparison. It states a conclusion in the name, and that conclusion has carried further than the evidence behind it. A compound named for an observed association is not thereby established to cause it.

What is straightforward

Both are short sequences, easily characterised by mass and chromatography. Whatever remains unsettled about the biology, whether the vial contains the stated sequence at the stated purity is a question with a definite answer — and a certificate naming the analysing laboratory provides it.

Frequently asked questions

What does DSIP stand for?
Delta sleep-inducing peptide. The name comes from the delta-wave activity it was isolated in connection with, which is a description of the circumstances of its discovery rather than an established mechanism.
Are Epitalon and DSIP from the same research programme?
No. Epitalon comes from the Russian peptide-bioregulator work; DSIP was characterised separately. They are grouped by topic association, not by lineage.
Is the evidence base strong for either?
Independent replication is limited for both. DSIP's literature is older and scattered; Epitalon's is concentrated in one research tradition. In both cases the honest position is more uncertain than the summaries suggest.
