Kisspeptin-10 — what the (45-54) in the name means
Kisspeptin is a family, not a molecule. The number after the name tells you which fragment is in the vial, and the fragments differ by thousands of daltons.
Kisspeptin-10 is a ten-residue fragment corresponding to residues 45 to 54 of the parent kisspeptin peptide, CAS 374675-21-5, molecular weight 1302.45 g/mol. Kisspeptin is a family rather than a single molecule, and the number in the name is what tells you which fragment a vial actually contains.

The family, and why the number matters
The KISS1 gene product is processed into peptides of different lengths, conventionally named by residue count — kisspeptin-54, kisspeptin-14, kisspeptin-13, kisspeptin-10. They share a common C-terminal region but differ enormously in mass: kisspeptin-54 is roughly five times the weight of kisspeptin-10.
A vial labelled simply Kisspeptin has not told you which one it contains. Since a protocol written for one fragment and executed with another is wrong by a factor of several in molar terms, the number is not a detail.
Residue numbering explained
The (45-54) notation counts from the start of the parent sequence, so kisspeptin-10 is the last ten residues of the 54-residue form. The naming convention differs between papers — some number from the precursor and some from the mature peptide — which is why the CAS number is a more reliable identifier than the name.
What the published work examined
Three studies in our research library, from 2017 to 2023, are clinical investigations concerning neuroendocrine signalling. They are linked below and describe research findings only.

Frequently asked questions
- What does kisspeptin-10 mean?
- A ten-residue fragment corresponding to residues 45 to 54 of the parent kisspeptin peptide. The number in the name identifies which fragment of the KISS1 gene product is present — kisspeptin-54, -14, -13 and -10 differ by thousands of daltons.
- What is the molecular weight of kisspeptin-10?
- 1302.45 g/mol, formula C63H83N17O14, CAS 374675-21-5. For comparison, kisspeptin-54 is roughly five times that mass, which is why the fragment number matters.
- How do I know which kisspeptin fragment I have?
- Check the molecular weight on the Certificate of Analysis against the fragment named on the label. A figure near 1302 g/mol is kisspeptin-10. The CAS number is a more reliable identifier than the name, since numbering conventions differ between papers.

More on identification
- Semax — an ACTH fragment with a Pro-Gly-Pro tailSemax is ACTH (4-7) with a proline-glycine-proline tail attached. That tail is a design decision shared with Selank, and it explains both compounds.
- Selank — a tuftsin analog, and the tail it shares with SemaxSelank is tuftsin with the same Pro-Gly-Pro tail Semax carries. Two compounds, one structural idea, and no methionine to worry about.
- Dihexa — why it is not really a peptideDihexa is an angiotensin IV analog built with non-amino-acid components. Peptide COA conventions apply to it only partly, and that trips people up.
