A Certificate of Analysis in your name — what it covers

A re-issued COA changes whose letterhead the data appears on. It does not change the data, the lot, or who performed the analysis — and claiming otherwise is where operators get into trouble.

A second-brand Certificate of Analysis presents the same lot and the same third-party analytical data under your name and letterhead. It is a change of presentation, not of substance. The analysis, the laboratory and the lot number stay exactly as they were, and representing otherwise is the mistake worth avoiding.

What a re-issued certificate actually is

Your customers ask for documentation, and a certificate carrying a competitor's or a supplier's name undercuts the brand you are building. Re-issuing solves a presentation problem: the same analytical values, the same methods, the same lot, rendered under your identity.

What does not change is the substance. The laboratory that ran the analysis is still the laboratory that ran it. The lot is still the lot. A re-issued certificate is a formatting operation performed on a factual record, and it is legitimate precisely because the facts survive it unaltered.

Where operators get this wrong

  • Altering an analytical value. This converts a document into a false record, and it is the fastest way to turn a commercial dispute into something worse.
  • Removing or changing the laboratory identification, which destroys the traceability that made the certificate worth having.
  • Representing that your company performed the analysis. You did not, and the laboratory's records say so.
  • Representing that your company manufactured the material when it was supplied to you finished.

What it costs and why

Re-issue is priced per product rather than per lot because the work is in setting up the template, mapping the fields and proofing the output — done once per product, then applied to each lot as it comes through. Ours is priced per product in the written terms for your account.

What to confirm with a supplier before relying on it

  • That the re-issued document reports the same lot as the material you received.
  • That the testing laboratory remains identified on it.
  • That the supplier will provide the original alongside it on request, which is what you want if a customer ever asks a hard question.
  • That the arrangement is in the written agreement rather than an understanding.

Our position

We re-issue Certificates of Analysis under a client's name where the wholesale agreement provides for it, on the terms above: same lot, same third-party data, presentation only. The agreement states that altering an analytical value is a material breach, because a document nobody can rely on is worse than no document.

Frequently asked questions

What is a second-brand Certificate of Analysis?
The same lot and the same third-party analytical data, re-issued under your name and letterhead instead of the supplier's. It is a change of presentation only — the analysis, the laboratory and the lot number are unchanged.
Can I edit a Certificate of Analysis before giving it to a customer?
No. Every value on it is checkable against the issuing laboratory, and altering one converts a factual record into a false one. The only safe change is presentation — the values, methods, dates and laboratory identification stay exactly as issued.
Does a COA in my name mean my company did the testing?
No, and representing that it does is a mistake. The laboratory that performed the analysis is still the laboratory that performed it, and its records say so. A re-issued certificate changes whose letterhead the data appears on, nothing more.
