Dihexa vs Semax — different molecules, both wearing the nootropic label

5 min readUpdated 2026-10-07

Semax is a synthetic analogue of an ACTH fragment, developed in Russian research institutes and studied in neurological models. Dihexa is a compound derived from angiotensin IV, studied in a Western academic setting in connection with hepatocyte growth factor signalling. They share a marketing category and almost nothing else — different origins, different proposed mechanisms, different literatures.

The nootropic label puts these two on the same shelf. Chemistry puts them nowhere near each other, and the comparison is more useful as an illustration of how marketing categories form than as a guide to either compound.

Why category labels mislead here

"Nootropic" describes an intended area of interest, not a mechanism, a chemical class or an evidence standard. Two compounds can carry it while sharing no pathway and no research tradition — which is exactly the case here, and it is why ranking them against each other produces confident answers with nothing underneath.

  • Ask what the compound is derived from before accepting that two products are alternatives.
  • Check whether the evidence is preclinical or clinical, and in which research environment it was produced.
  • Be sceptical of comparisons that cite no study for either side.
  • A modified compound and a plain peptide sequence are documented differently; expect the certificate to reflect that.

Frequently asked questions

Are Dihexa and Semax related?
No. Semax derives from a fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone. Dihexa derives from angiotensin IV. They are grouped because both are marketed for cognitive research interest, which is a category label rather than a chemical relationship.
Which has more published research?
Semax has the wider published footprint, much of it Russian-language and including clinical work conducted there. Dihexa's literature is smaller and largely preclinical, concentrated around a specific line of academic work.
Is Dihexa a peptide?
It is peptide-derived rather than a straightforward peptide — a modified compound based on an angiotensin IV fragment. That distinction matters analytically, because characterisation conventions differ between a plain sequence and a modified molecule.
