White label, private label, contract manufacturing — the difference
Three terms used interchangeably that mean different things commercially. Which one you actually want depends on who owns the formulation and who carries the inventory.
White label means buying an existing product and putting your name on it. Private label usually means the same thing with more control over presentation. Contract manufacturing means paying someone to make a product you specify. The distinction that matters commercially is who owns the formulation and who carries the inventory risk.

The three models, plainly
| Model | Formulation | Inventory risk | Typical minimum |
|---|---|---|---|
| White label | Supplier's existing product | Usually the buyer's, bought forward | Moderate |
| Private label | Supplier's product, buyer controls presentation | Buyer's | Moderate |
| Contract manufacturing | Buyer specifies, supplier builds | Buyer's, plus development cost | High |
In practice the peptide market uses white label and private label interchangeably, and both usually describe the same arrangement: an existing, already-validated preparation supplied under your branding. Contract manufacturing is genuinely different — you are commissioning something that does not yet exist, and paying for the development and validation that implies.
Why the distinction decides your minimum
A white or private label arrangement draws on inventory the supplier already makes, so the minimum reflects a commercially sensible first order rather than a production run. Contract manufacturing carries a setup cost that has to be amortised, which is why those minimums are higher and why the first order is rarely the cheapest one.
For most operators entering this category, private label is the correct model. The formulation question is already settled by the literature and by what the market buys; what is unsettled is your brand, your customers and your fulfillment.
What you are actually buying in a private label arrangement
- A preparation already synthesised, filled, finished and tested, rather than a project.
- Analytical documentation per lot, which is what your own customers will ask for.
- Your labeling, your branding, and where offered, Certificates of Analysis re-issued in your name.
- A fulfillment choice: take bulk to your own premises, or have the supplier ship individual orders under your brand.
Where control actually sits
Under any of these models the supplier controls formulation, manufacturing process and testing, and you control branding, pricing, customers and channel. That division is not a limitation of private label — it is the reason it works. A supplier who will let you alter analytical values or claim you manufactured the material is telling you something about how they treat their other clients.
Our program
Bench Grade Peptides operates a private label program: research-use-only lyophilized preparations, third-party tested per lot, supplied under your branding with three fulfillment models. Minimums are set per account and written into the price sheet you receive.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between white label and private label peptides?
- In this market the two terms are used interchangeably and usually describe the same arrangement: an existing, already-validated preparation supplied under your branding. The meaningful distinction is against contract manufacturing, where you specify a product that does not yet exist.
- Should a new brand use private label or contract manufacturing?
- Private label, in almost every case. Contract manufacturing carries development and validation cost that has to be amortised across volume a new brand does not have yet, and the formulation question is already settled by what the literature and the market support.
- Who owns the formulation in a private label arrangement?
- The supplier. You own your branding, pricing, customers and channel. That division is what makes the model work — and a supplier willing to let you claim you manufactured the material is signalling how they treat their other clients.
